The line said the standard containers in its 3m teu fleet will be equipped with the technology, following on from the 2019 rollout for its reefer containers.

The trackers will transmit real-time GPS location data, temperature information and report any sudden shocks to the container. The trackers are ATEX Zone 2 explosion proof, and further sensors can be added in the future by Bluetooth, said Hapag-Lloyd.

TradeTech partner Nexxiot AG will provide devices from summer, and ORBCOMM will supply devices from later in the year.

“Going forward, we will be able to provide all our customers with real-time track and trace data, giving them full visibility of any container movement worldwide. We will be able to detect delays earlier, inform impacted customers automatically and initiate counteractions at an early stage. We firmly believe that our real-time tracking approach will not only be beneficial for our customers but be a game changer for the entire container shipping industry”, said Maximilian Rothkopf, COO of Hapag-Lloyd.

Hapag-Lloyd LIVE, the line’s monitoring technology, will be rolled out to standard customers at some time in 2023. The service is already available to reefer customers on a two-tier model, allowing access to data including Temperature Set Point, Actual Supply Air, Actual Retun Air, GPS Location, Track and Trace Events, Ambient Temperature, Power on/off and Relative Humidity.

“It is our vision to build the world’s smartest container fleet and to provide valuable information to our customers at the frequency they need” states Olaf Habert, Director Container Applications at Hapag-Lloyd. “Working with the most advanced companies for global-scale IoT applications will help us to equip our container fleet as fast as possible. This is what our customers now require and increasingly expect so they can manage their complex supply chains better.”
